Can I write a Will that leaves money and other valuables to people other than my partner and children?

When writing a Will, apart from the obvious of leaving your half of the estate to your partner, quite often there are other things that you would like to mention in your Will. For example, as many of us get married later in life, we would have accumulated a lot of personal possessions some of which we might actually prefer are left to others. Writing a Will allows you to state what specific possessions you would like to go to certain people.

It is also often the case that as you are writing a Will all sorts of thoughts pop into your head about who should get what and you may find that the list gets very long – so sometimes people write a list of wishes for their executors to try and follow. When writing a Will it is useful to remember that if you are leaving gifts to lots of people gifts fall into three main categories - specific, monetary and residuary.
